Behavioral Interview Basic
Have you ever had a disagreement with a colleague or manager? How did you handle it?
About This Question
This question tests your communication skills, emotional management, and whether you can handle conflict maturely in a team setting. The interviewer isn't looking for who was right — they want to see your process and attitude.
Answer Framework
- Describe the situation: What was the disagreement about? Where did it happen?
- Your position: What was your viewpoint?
- How you communicated: What specific actions did you take to resolve it?
- Result: How did you reach a consensus? What was the impact on the team?
STAR Example
[S] On one project, a teammate and I disagreed on how to implement a feature.
I preferred using Composition API to extract logic, while they felt
Options API was more intuitive.
[T] We needed to reach a consensus before the deadline to avoid
delaying development.
[A] I proactively set up a time to discuss it. We each explained our reasoning,
and I prepared a simple demo comparing maintainability of both approaches.
We agreed to use readability and long-term maintenance as our deciding criteria.
[R] We went with my approach, but I also came to understand their concerns.
I added detailed documentation afterward so the whole team could
get up to speed quickly.
Answer Tips
- 🤝 Show respect and empathy: Even if you were right, demonstrate that you valued the other person's perspective
- 🔍 Focus on facts: Use data and logic to persuade, not emotion
- 🏆 Emphasize that the team's outcome was the priority: Show you weren't just trying to win, but to find the best solution
- ❌ Don't criticize former colleagues or managers: Even if they were genuinely difficult, it only makes you look immature
Common Mistakes
- Saying "I never have conflicts with anyone" (sounds unrealistic)
- Portraying the other person negatively to make yourself look like the only right one
- Not explaining your specific actions — just saying "we eventually worked it out"
