Behavioral Interview Basic
Can you tell me about yourself?
About This Question
This is the opener for almost every interview. Its purpose is to let the interviewer quickly understand who you are, your background, and why you're a good fit for the role.
Answer Framework: "Past → Present → Future"
Structure your answer in three parts:
- Past: Briefly describe your educational background or previous work
- Present: Current skills and projects you've worked on
- Future: Why you're interested in this role and the value you can bring
Example Structure
Hi, my name is [Name]. My background is in [relevant background].
During that time I learned [technologies/skills] and completed [projects].
I'm interested in this role because [reason], and I believe
my [specific skills] can bring [value] to the team.
Answer Tips
- ⏱️ Keep it to 1.5–2 minutes: Too short seems unprepared; too long loses focus
- 🎯 Tailor it to the role: Highlight the most relevant experience and skills
- 📖 Use a story to convey motivation: Explain why you chose this path
- ❌ Don't just read your resume: The interviewer has already seen it — add the story behind it
- 💡 End by connecting to the position: Let the interviewer know why you're here
Common Mistakes
- Sharing too many unrelated personal details
- Being overly self-deprecating ("I'm still learning, I might not be good enough…")
- Not customizing the answer for the specific company or role
